9 Gamut Procedure

While first studying Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT Tapping), I learned a process called the 9 Gamut Procedure that EFT Founder Gary Craig included in the “Full” Basic Recipe. It involves tapping on a point on the back of the hand and concentrating on the issue being worked on while completing nine “interesting” steps. The 9 Gamut Procedure is what you want to use if you feel stuck while using the shorter Basic Recipe or have trouble decreasing the intensity of a stubborn issue.

After learning this technique, I had concerns about my clients being open to this unusual series of actions. But after seeing the amazing results from using the process on myself and others, I decided to add it in whenever needed. And nobody has complained! The nine steps include eye movements and other activities which engage both hemispheres of the brain. Research shows specific eye movements to be very effective in processing past traumatic memories.

How to Practice the 9 Gamut Procedure

The Gamut Point is located on the back of the hand about an inch down from the knuckles between the little finger and the ring finger. See the image above. Find the space with one or two fingers of the opposite hand, moving from the knuckles toward the wrist until you feel a slight indentation. When you massage, hold, or gently tap there, it stimulates the Triple Heater acupuncture meridian.

Once you find the point, focus on the issue you’re working on, and continue to tap, hold, or massage the point while doing the following nine steps:

  • Close your eyes for a few seconds
  • Open your eyes
  • Keeping your head still, look hard down to the right
  • Continuing to keeping your head still, look hard down to the left
  • Slowly roll your eyes in a full circle in a clockwise direction, imagining that you can see each number on the face of a clock
  • Then slowly roll your eyes back in a full circle in a counter-clockwise direction
  • Hum about 5 seconds of any song that comes to mind
  • Count to 5 out loud
  • Lastly, hum about 5 seconds of any song again

Take a slow, calming breath and you’re done! Yes, it does become easy once you’ve done it a few times, so I recommend practicing.

When Can I Practice the 9 Gamut Procedure?

You can use it on its own, or insert it into the shorter Basic Recipe. After the Setup Statement and tapping on all the other points, follow the 9 Gamut Procedure. Take a couple of slow, calming breaths and estimate your new intensity level. Give it a try and see how you feel!
