I Gained 6 Pounds?!

Yes, I did. Almost three weeks of family visits generously provided me with a bit of extra padding. A combination of overeating at a cousin’s wedding celebrations, stress eating, feelings of not wanting to offend by not eating, unique chocolate bars, and “oh, I’m on vacation” excuses has packed it on. How do I feel about that? I am frustrated and disappointed in myself.

As I sit here in my now too-tight jeans, completely addicted to sugar again, it would be easy to just keep eating the sugary foods at the same volume I’ve been consuming for three weeks. But I know how icky I feel and I know I’ll feel better if I can just ease off. My first thought was that I was going to be depriving myself for the next few weeks. As I tapped on my feelings, a better thought came up! I’m not depriving myself at all. Instead, I’m practicing self-care. I like the sound of that so much more.

Self-care for me includes planning and eating tasty nutritious meals so I have more long-lasting energy, finding fun activities to help burn calories, getting plenty of sleep, and treating myself. I don’t treat myself with food, but with something on my go-to list. I LOVE a gentle face and scalp massage. It’s a very special treat for me and so I will plan that treat for my first week of self-care. Just thinking about and planning my treats is fun!

But right here, right now, my ‘roll’ is still perched atop my waistband and I’m uncomfortable. And I want something sweet! EFT Tapping is just the thing to get me out of this downward spiral. If you’re in a similar situation, adapt the script below with your words to match how you feel. Estimate the intensity of how you feel. On a scale from 0 – 10, I’m about a 7. Now let’s tap! Feel free to review the basic tapping recipe first if you want.

While tapping at or holding the side of the hand point:

Even though I’m frustrated with this extra weight, and I’m disappointed with myself for eating so much, I accept how I feel and I’m going to practice self-care today!

Even though my jeans are tight because I ate too much and gained 6 pounds, I accept myself anyway, just the way I am.

Even though I am uncomfortable with this extra weight, I am moving forward with a self-care plan and I’m OK.

Top of head (TOH): My jeans are too tight!

Eyebrow (EB): I am so uncomfortable.

Side of the eye (SE): I am frustrated and disappointed with myself.

Under the eye (UE): Why did I eat so much?

Under the nose (UN): I am really uncomfortable right now.

Chin (Ch): And I just want to eat a candy bar to feel better.

Collar bone (CB): But I know I’ll only feel worse about myself then.

Under the arm (UA): I am so frustrated and disappointed.

TOH: Maybe even angry at myself.

EB: Why wasn’t I stronger?

SE: Why did I eat so much?

UE: I am angry and upset at myself.

UN: I am uncomfortable.

Ch: I am disappointed in myself.

CB: I know better but I did it anyway.

UA: And now I’m uncomfortable.

Take a deep breath. If you’re practicing along, notice how intense your feelings are now. My intensity is down from a 7 to a 3, so I’m going to do a round of positive tapping to highlight my intentions for self-care. If your intensity is still high, repeat the above rounds and then do the positive tapping.

At the side of the hand point:

Even though I’m still a little disappointed in myself, I accept myself anyway and I’m moving forward.

TOH: I am excited to focus on self-care now.

EB: I can treat myself to tasty meals that are good for me.

SE: I look forward to walking with my friend today.

UE: And I’m going to schedule a face massage for myself!

UN: I can take care of myself and lose this weight.

Ch: And I’ll feel so much better about myself and about life.

CB: I will give myself time to get plenty of sleep.

UA: It feels so good to practice self-care.

Take a deep breath… There now. I feel so much better than I did 10 minutes ago before I tapped and I hope you do, too. My jeans are still tight, but I know I’m doing everything I can do in this moment to take care of myself so that I’ll feel comfortable again. I know it won’t be immediate, but I am patient enough to practice self-care in the long term. And when an unexpected piece of cake shows up, I’ll tap BEFORE giving in and see how I feel then so I can make the right choice for me at that moment! Yes! I feel more powerful already.

If you’d like help gaining control of cravings and learning self-care, I’m here. I’d love to support you on your journey.

Keep Calm and Tap On!
