When You Come To A Fork In The Road…

…Tap on it! You knew that was coming, right? πŸ™‚ Seriously though…we all have times when we have divergent paths in our day and indeed even in our life. Decisions range from where to go for lunch or what to wear to the gym, to which school to choose, which career to pursue, whether to take that great new job if it means moving, or whether to settle down with a certain special someone.

We all face choices each day. Many are easy decisions, the answer is obvious and the consequences are minimal. Today I chose leftovers for lunch to help clear out the refrigerator rather than going out. That was an easy and probably healthier choice for me today. But what about those choices that leave us paralyzed with indecision, stuck because we want to be sure to make the “right” choice? What to do, what to do…

I am faced with one of those decisions today. Rather than stress out, lose sleep, and cave in to junk food as a way of dealing with a difficult decision, I take a few deep breaths, ask myself what emotions I am feeling, where I feel them in my body, and how intense they are. When I have trouble identifying an emotion, I focus on what I am feeling in my body. Then I tap about that.

How is it going to help make a tough decision by tapping on what sensations we have in our body? Fair question… Tapping works gently by easing the sensation of tension or tightness or whatever we are experiencing, and while tapping about that sensation, the little panic button in our brain turns off the alarm and thoughts begin to surface. These thoughts will provide the next thing to tap on. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Eventually we get to the real reasons the decision is so hard to make. Maybe we don’t want to uproot the kids from their school to move to a great new job. Maybe we are worried that this career move isn’t right at this time. By tapping down the fear, and any other emotions we identify, we may be able to make a clear decision that takes all things into consideration. We can even simply tap on the fear that it won’t be the right choice. Try it and see if that helps you get unstuck. Here’s a fun tapping script that will help you feel more calm about not knowing what to do. Take a guess how intense your feelings are about not knowing what decision to make, from 0 – 10. Now take a slow, deep breath and let’s tap:

Setup Statement:

Even though I have no idea what to do, I deeply and completely accept myself.
Even though I don’t know which choice is the right one, I accept myself anyway.
Even though I really don’t know what to do right now, I completely accept myself and how I feel.

Reminder Phrases on all the points:

Top Of the Head: I don’t know what to do,
Eyebrow: but I accept myself anyway.
Side of the Eye: I don’t know what to do,
Under the Eye: but I deeply and completely accept myself.
Under the Nose: I don’t know which choice I should make,
Chin: and I accept myself anyway.
Collarbone: I really really don’t know what to do,
Under the Arm: but I accept myself anyway.

Take another slow, deep breath and guess the intensity of your feelings again. Did it go down? If so, great. If not, try another round of tapping and substitute words that are more specific to you and how you feel. As EFT Master Ann Adams says “For results that are terrific, you have to be specific.

We don’t have a crystal ball and most times we can’t know with certainty which choice is best. But if we can calm our brain and body with EFT Tapping, we can make the best decision given the information we have available. When it comes to choosing whether to tap or not, that’s an easy one…because why not? Ah…another thing to tap on. πŸ™‚

Keep Calm and Tap On!
