If you suffer from migraines or frequent headaches, you might benefit from my story about how I learned to control them.
This happened a few months ago at the end of a stressful week. I was away from home, subjected to unfamiliar foods, constant exhaust fumes, and uncomfortable situations, both physical and emotional. The day I was to leave I started seeing the visual pattern that precedes my migraine headaches. (I’m one of the 25% of migraine sufferers who experience a visual aura as a warning sign before the migraine pain begins.*)
As a stress relief specialist, I understand how all these physical and emotional stresses can impact my body. And thankfully I know some tools to deal with the impact. I’ve used Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Tapping to stop a migraine in its tracks before, so I decided to do that again.
I went into a quiet room by myself, got still and started tapping on the side of my hand.
“Even though I have a migraine that is trying to start, I completely accept myself anyway.
Even though I know my body is just trying to keep me safe by making me slow down, I accept and forgive myself.
Even though my body is reacting to all this stress by giving me a migraine, I accept how I feel and I thank my body for trying to take care of me.”
Tapping on the other points, I used reminder phrases like:
“Thank you, body.
I know you’re trying to protect me.
I’ve been going nonstop for 7 days in a row.
And I know that’s too much for me.
I hear you loud and clear,
and I see the aura that means a migraine is coming.
I accept that this is simply to help me slow down and take care of myself.
And I promise I will do that starting right now.
I can let go of most of this stress today.
And today I will plan a day of self-care and put it on my calendar for next week.
Taking care of myself will help me be my best.
Thank you for helping me see that I need to slow down.
I’m releasing this stress now so I can get through today.
And plan my day of self-care…”
For this migraine, I used the full tapping recipe, including the finger points and the more advanced 9-Gamut procedure. I tapped for about 8-10 minutes solid, round after round, listening to what my body had to say as I tapped on all the points. Then I was still for another minute. Breathing slowly and evenly, and feeling calmer.
Yes, I know it’s weird to just start tapping on your hand, head and torso talking about a headache. But since a migraine will most likely take you out of commission for hours if not days, 10-15 minutes of quiet time to tap is well worth the effort.
When I left that room, I made sure to drink plenty of water and to start planning my day of self-care. And my migraine never bloomed! The aura stopped and the pain never came! Even though I have used EFT Tapping to stop a migraine before, it still amazes me that it really works. If it works for me, it can work for you, too.
Thankfully that’s the last time I’ve had a migraine try to start. Maybe I’ve got them under control because I’m much better now at taking time out for myself and practicing self-care. I tap daily even when I don’t have words. The simple act of tapping on the points will calm and relax you so that things go easier.
